Halifax’s popular weekend farmers’ market has found a new home along the bustling waterfront boardwalk, drawing crowds and energizing the city’s summer atmosphere. The expansion, which debuted last Saturday, brings dozens of local vendors into direct contact with the city’s largest concentration of foot traffic.
Previously confined to a brick building in the Seaport District, the market now spills out onto wooden piers and shaded tents along the boardwalk, running from Bishop’s Landing to Salter Street. Visitors can browse everything from organic vegetables and fresh-caught seafood to handmade crafts and baked goods—all while enjoying panoramic views of the harbour.
The move was coordinated by the Halifax Farmers' Cooperative in partnership with the Halifax Port Authority. Organizers say it offers vendors more exposure and gives residents and tourists a vibrant, open-air shopping experience. 'We’ve seen a 30% increase in foot traffic compared to last year,' said market coordinator Ellie Ross.
Musicians and street performers add to the ambiance, with acoustic sets and cultural performances scheduled throughout the day. A new 'community table' space also offers local nonprofits and environmental groups a rotating platform to engage with the public.
Some vendors have expressed concern about unpredictable weather, but organizers are working on long-term solutions, including semi-permanent canopy structures and windbreaks. Additional seating and signage are also in the works to help with crowd flow during peak hours.
The boardwalk market runs every Saturday and Sunday through October, with extended hours during holiday weekends. City officials say the expansion supports local food security, boosts tourism, and activates public space in ways that benefit the broader community.
